A Place in Golf History

The Catalina Island Golf Course, nestled in the scenic landscape of Avalon on Catalina Island, boasts a storied history dating back to the late 19th century. Originally constructed in 1892 as a modest three-hole course, making it the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi. The course expanded to nine holes in the early 1900s, driven by increasing interest in golf from both locals and visitors. By 1929, Catalina's course was transformed into a full 18-hole course, establishing it as a premier destination for golf enthusiasts in Southern California.

The 18-hole layout, completed in the late 1920s, coincided with the island's rise as a glamorous getaway for Hollywood celebrities and sports figures. However, the course's current nine-hole format came into place in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II. This version, which has remained unchanged since, features a unique combination of five Par 4s and four Par 3s, offering a satisfying challenge for both novice and experienced golfers alike.

Catalina Island Golf Course is renowned for its distinct design, which winds through a narrow canyon and stretches toward the island’s iconic Avalon Bay. This dramatic canyon layout presents a variety of elevations and a few narrow fairways, making it a strategic test for players. Small greens, deep bunkers, and undulating terrain add to the challenge, demanding accuracy and skill from golfers navigating the course. Its natural surroundings, complemented by panoramic views of Avalon and the Catalina Casino, make for a memorable playing experience.

Despite its compact nine-hole layout, the course’s features allow golfers to enjoy a full practice regimen. Facilities include a driving net and a small putting green where players can hone their skills before taking on the course’s more intricate obstacles.

An integral part of the course’s history is its association with the Bobby Jones Invitational Tournament, a prestigious event held here annually from 1931 to 1955. Named after the legendary golfer Bobby Jones, this tournament attracted some of the finest players of the time, further elevating the reputation of the Catalina Island Golf Course and cementing its place in golf history.

Today, the Catalina Island Golf Course stands as a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and sport, attracting visitors from around the world. Whether you’re drawn to its challenging terrain, the historical legacy of its fairways, or the stunning coastal views, a round of golf here provides a connection to a storied past and an unforgettable experience amid Catalina Island’s rugged, tranquil landscape.
